  • Angus Foundation Announces First Talon Youth Education Learning Program

We want to congratulate Jessica Janssen of Fowler, Indiana on this excellent opportunity she will be a part of this summer! Angus Foundation Announces First Talon Youth Education Learning Program Intern, Host Ranch Jessica Janssen, Fowler, Ind., will intern with Maher Angus Ranch, Morristown, S.D. The Angus Foundation is pleased to introduce Jessica Janssen, Fowler, Ind., as the first Talon Youth Education Learning Program Intern. Janssen will intern with Maher Angus Ranch, Morristown, S.D. The Talon Youth Education Learning Program internship is the legacy of Camron “Cam” Cooper of Talon Ranch. Cooper set up the Angus/Talon Youth Education Learning Program Endowment Fund in 2009 to be a holistic educational experience for students. The internship program pairs motivated Angus youth with working registered Angus breeders/ranches to provide youth valuable education and work experience for a summer. The internship program is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent college graduates under age 25 who are majoring in an agricultural field of study. Janssen is a junior at Purdue University, where she is pursuing an animal science degree. She has an associate’s in agriculture from Ivy Tech Community College, Lafayette, Ind. Janssen’s career goal is to become a beef nutritionist. “I look at this internship as an opportunity to expand my knowledge of beef cattle nutrition, which will help me be a more well-rounded candidate when I enter the workforce following graduation,” Janssen says. In addition, Janssen is a 12-year member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and Indiana Junior Angus Association. She served as the 2014 Indiana Angus Princess and competed as Indiana representative in showmanship at the 2012 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). Janssen’s leadership extends beyond the Angus industry. She currently serves as Indiana Junior Charolais Association president, a role she’s held for two years. At Purdue University, Janssen participates in Collegiate FFA and the Indiana Junior Beef Cattle Association. She has also received her American FFA Degree. “Jessica is just the type of student that Cam Cooper wanted to provide with opportunities in the beef industry,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We believe she will gain a tremendous amount from her internship experience with Maher Angus Ranch.” Maher Angus Ranch is a 550-head registered Angus herd on 8,000 acres in northern South Dakota. The ranch has previously hosted a foreign intern and hosts tours for other cattle producers. The ranch looks to provide Janssen with experiences in AI, rotational grazing, haying, brandings, steer selection, ultrasounding, preconditioning, heat detection, pregnancy checking, tractor operation, recordkeeping, fitting and showing, in addition to other educational opportunities such as local/regional tours and beef industry events. “I feel our family-owned and operated ranch has a lot to offer for education for a young intern,” says Casey Maher, ranch owner and third generation Angus breeder. “The intern will work side by side with lifetime ranchers.” “We believe Maher Angus Ranch and Jessica are a great match for the first Talon Youth Education Learning Program Internship,” adds Jenkins. “We are confident that Jessica and her host ranch will learn from each other and both will grow personally and professionally as a result of the experience.” For more information about the Angus Foundation, call 816-383-5100 or email mjenkins@angusfoundation.org. • A Tribute to Jack Sweeney

We are saddened by the passing of a longtime Indiana Angus supporter, volunteer, and board member, Jack Sweeney. Our former President, John Finke, shares some words in his e-blast from last night: Greetings....Toughest part of doing these eblasts....yesterday evening, Jack Sweeney passed away. Longtime Indiana Angus member, a huge supporter of our Angus youth, Indiana Angus history expert and friend to many! Always proud of his West Central association and faithful and tireless worker for any and every aspect that has made the West Central association great. Fortunately, Jack was working at last year's Preview Show to be surprised as the 2016 directories were distributed and it had been dedicated to Jack. His wife Martha and family have said visitation and funeral will be family only. Later this year, they will host a celebration of life for a chance for all of us to honor Jack. Rest in peace Jack....thanks for your time and talents that you had contributed to our Indiana Angus Association. The full obituary is below. Please keep his family, friends, and the entire Indiana Angus family in your prayers in the coming days and weeks. John Joseph 'Jack' Sweeney 77, of Noblesville, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Riverview Health in Noblesville. He was born on February 21, 1940 to John and Helen Sweeney in Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Sweeney. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Moran Sweeney; three children, Susan Sweeney of Indianapolis, John (Susan) Sweeney of Katy, TX and Tom Sweeney of Westfield; two granddaughters, McKenzie & Heather Sweeney; and several nieces & nephews. Jack was a graduate of Michigan State University and was a member of the Michigan Air National Guard for six years. His entire working career was spent with the Kroger Company as a manager of Distribution and Transportation. After love of family, his greatest passion was supporting the beef cattle industry. He held various offices in the Indiana Angus Association and was a mentor to many young people in their agricultural careers. A private family service will be held. A celebration of Jack's life will be held in June for all of Jack & Martha's family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to either the American Diabetes Association , Indiana Office, 8604 Allisonville Road, Suite 140, Indianapolis, IN 46250; or a charity of your choice . The family has entrusted cremation to Randall & Roberts Funeral Home in Noblesville. Condolences: .
